Where is version 0.9?
Hello everyone
I know it has been a long time since the last update. For those who don’t know I have a Youtube channel where I talk about the latest new on the game.
However I figured it’s about time to do an update on the game here as well.
So what have I been up to?
After the version 0.8 I ported the game to Godot 4.x. It just made more sense to make the switch now, as many features of Godot 4 made developing the game much easier.
This port is done by now, however:
Porting the game made me realize that I’m still not quite happy with the game’s artstyle, story and feature set. For example in version 0.8 the game looks more like a Playstation game. But my goal was always to make it look like the original Alone in the Dark trilogy. I just very much like the overall aesthetic of drawn background art, as well as the simple to understand and snappy ui without unnecessary effects. In addition the content of the game would be easier to scale up.
Foe example: Books, a central part of the game, have always been a lot of work and even taxed the performance in the Godot 3 version. Also they were difficult to read due to the way they were rendered.
These and many more problems can be completely avoided If I make the books work the same as in Alone in the Dark, Resident Evil and Silent Hill. Allowing me to make more books (in general more content) faster than before.
It’s sad to see those 3D book reading screens gone, but it’s better for the overall game.
This is just one example of the many changes I have been and am doing to the game. This is why the 0.9 version hasn’t been released yet. I want it to act as a demo, showing actual final gameplay and art as well as a coherent story.
The final result might be quite different from the screenshots and descriptions, but carries the same core ideas.
It will also be a lot more fun to play. I just need more time to get it done.
So when will version 0.9 release? I honestly don’t know. My aim is to get it released this year still. But my aim has been off on many occasions. So take what I say with a grain of salt.
Thanks for your patience. You’ll read from me again, when 0.9 gets released.
Until then, bye bye.
